Fedcology in the field

Project Title:
NRHP Determination of Eligibility Cultural Resource Sites
Customer:
USDA Forest Service, Deschutes National Forest
Location(s):
Bend, Oregon
Project Description:

In partnership with WS Geovisions and Heritage Stewardship Group, and in order to determine the NRHP eligibility of sites in the project area, our team identified the horizontal and vertical delineation of the site boundaries using surface survey, shovel probes, and 50cm by 50cm shovel tests. Surface surveys using no more than 10m intervals were used to identify the extent of the surface component. All diagnostic artifacts encountered during the surface survey were documented with GIS data, UTMs, and photographs/sketches but left in place. Surface concentrations were documented with GPS data and described in site forms. In addition to a recommendation of NRHP eligibility under or an explanation why a determination cannot be made, deliverables included:

  • Completed Forest Service site forms.
  • A letter report summarizing the work accomplished.
  • GIS data for site boundaries, test probes, and test units.
  • Digital photographs and photo logs.
  • All field notes and excavation forms.

Letter Reports included:

  • Description of sites evaluated and finding.
  • Description of field methods.
  • Description of any issues that may have impacted cultural resource evaluations.

Site forms included:

  • Completed site form including artifact catalog and soil profiles.
  • Basic analysis of collected artifacts by level including artifact count, class, material, size, and reduction stage/flake type.
  • Site overview photographs, detailed photographs as needed with aspect noted.
  • Photographs of each test unit.
  • Site location map at 1:24,000 scale.
