Project Description:
In partnership with the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation and leveraging their expertise in mollusk research, writing, survey implementation, and conservation planning in multiple western states, our team completed field surveys and developed written guidance for the USFS to aid in the conservation of sensitive terrestrial mollusks in California. Deliverables included:
- Conservation Strategy for Big Bar Hesperian, Shasta Hesperian, Shasta sideband, Wintu sideband, and Shasta chaparral snails.
- Comprehensive database of historical and current literature for the five mollusks.
- Analyze the survey history and other available information on the 5 mollusks to develop a site classification system based on biotic and abiotic site characteristics (e.g. vegetation, soils, geology, macro- and micro-climate variables).
- Conduct 2 site visits with federal and nonfederal partners in conservation to review and respond to comments on the draft Strategy.
